Without disturbing the larvae’s habitat, photographer @isaacszabo photographed a spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) sitting in its gelatinous egg in a small woodland pond in Boone County, Arkansas. The species forms a symbiotic relationship with algae within its egg mass, which provides oxygen and carbohydrates to the developing salamander while, in turn, consuming its waste products.
