On September 22, 2007, Joe Gebbia emailed his former college roommate Brian Chesky with a single paragraph and a subject line that just read “subletter.” The idea: rent out air mattresses in their San Francisco apartment to designers attending a sold-out conference and charge $80 a night. Chesky said yes. That email became the founding moment of Airbnb, and changed the way the world travels.
