OpenAI somehow managed to replace the already flawed ChatGPT Canvas mode with something even worse: Writing Blocks. The concept itself could have worked, but the editor inside Writing Blocks feels dramatically dumber than the normal chat. Rewrites that are effortless in the main thread suddenly become clumsy, generic, and unusable. Apparently that’s because Writing Blocks uses GPT-5.5 Instant and doesn’t use reasoning, which explains a lot.
